Originally wood, the pier was built in 1892 so Kauai could take shipments of goods from the mainland United States. In 1921, the state passed legislature allowing for $25,000 to be spent upgrading to concrete. In 1979, the pier was added to the National Register of Historic Places in Hawaii.
