Sound the trumpets and gather around to give a hardy applause to Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort & Spa for the honor of Hawaii’s Green Business Award. This award was presented by the State Energy Office of the Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism, Department of Health and The Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii in recognition of energy efficiency achievements by island businesses.

Since receiving the award in 2010, the crew at the Grand Hyatt Kauai has made even more improvements in their efforts, which include–

• Replacing 15,000 CFL light bulbs with LED’s to reduce lighting energy used by 70%.
• Renovating guestrooms to incorporate low-flow showerheads, toilets, sink aerators, ceiling fans and carpets made with recycled yarns.
• Installing new thermostats in guestrooms with sensors on lanai doors to turn air-conditioning off if door is open.
• Completing a number of back-of-house projects, which include the installation of a cooling tower and heat pumps that reduce energy use for air-conditioning and heat rejection by 15-20% annually.  Rejected heat produced by the air-conditioning system is used to heat the swimming pools and saltwater lagoon.

…just to name a few.

Cumulatively the resort’s energy conservation efforts have resulted in a 17% reduction in energy used as compared to 10 years ago, 20% as compared to 15 years ago.  This equates to a reduction in CO₂ emissions of over 10,000 tons or more than 23 million miles driven by the average passenger car.

All good stuff for Hawaii’s well being and the beauty of the “Garden Isle.”
