Survey: Want a Better Travel Experience? Use an Agent!

Travel agent's officeWith the ability to research and book trips online, should travelers today use a travel agent? Agents would say they make planning a trip easy, have access to better deals, have the knowledge to plan better vacations, and are great for booking special trips. And it turns out the majority of travelers agree, according to a recent survey commissioned by the American Society of Travel Agents (ASTA).

The survey of 3,000 U.S. travelers shows that 92% of those who used a travel agent expect to do so again. And why not? Seventy-two percent of those surveyed said agents make planning easy, 69% said agents are there to take care of them if something goes wrong on a trip, 68% said agents are great for booking special trips, 61% said agents have the knowledge to plan better vacations, and 59% said agents have access to better deals than the travelers could find themselves.

ASTA President and CEO Zane Kerby says in a statement that this survey confirms the notion that “when you use a travel agent, you have a better experience.”

He adds, “We know from the U.S. Travel Association that 429 million vacation days go unused by Americans every year. That means that when it comes to using those hard-earned days off, no one has time for a vacation do-over. Using a professional travel agent is critical to taking the risk out of travel planning.”

The ASTA survey also provides insight into who the “typical travel-agent customer” is: “younger, more affluent, a racial minority, male, travels frequently and most often travels alone.”

ASTA adds that, for millennials, 41% used a travel agent in the past 12 months.

The full report on the survey can be purchased in the ASTA store. Additionally, ASTA members can participate in a May 14 webinar on how to use the results to create better messaging, and a June 23 webinar on understanding U.S. travelers.
