“Mexico’s Gateway to the World”

Mexico City will be getting a new airport, announced Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto on Tuesday. With demand rising for flights into Mexico City, which has seen an increase in tourism the last several years, the new airport will be the biggest in Latin America and serve as a stop for visitors and a hub to other destinations.

The new airport is looking to have up to six runways and the capacity to welcome 120 million travelers annually. The current Benito Juárez International utilizes two runways, but since the runways are too close to one another, only one can be used at a time. With an average nine percent growth in visitors in the past three years, the new airport will aim to be “Mexico’s gateway to the world,” says Peña Nieto.

Though this structure will not be completed until 2018-2019, see why Mexico City – and Mexico itself – has become one of the premier destinations in Latin America with Live It to Believe It from Visit Mexico.
