British Virgin Islands: An Au Naturel Vacation

When you come to the British Virgin Islands, you are visiting the quintessential paradise.  Don’t believe me? Then believe Jimmy Buffet, who wrote “Cheeseburger in Paradise” with Tortola’s Cane Garden Bay in mind or Kenny Chesney who filmed the music video “No Shoes, No Shirts, No Problems” at Ivan’s Stress Free Bar on Jost Van Dyke. Even the British pirate Edward Teach, better known as Blackbeard, sailed to BVI frequently and made it his home from 1715 to 1718. Necker, the famed celebrity getaway owned by Sir Richard Branson, is in BVI.

Why are the British Virgin Islands so popular? They’re pure; unlike their Caribbean neighbor islands, they don’t have high-rise hotels or casinos. Sure, we like those, too, but sometimes exploring “Nature’s Little Secrets” is just what your inner workaholic craves—an escape to a treasure trove of natural wonders and beauty with seemingly untouched beaches, the world’s best sailing and a laid-back atmosphere.

Nature’s Little Secrets in the British Virgin Islands

A cluster of more than 60 islands, the British Virgin Islands are also known as “the land that time forgot” with incredible, natural features that can’t be experienced anywhere else:

British Virgin Islands Sandy Cay

The water is clear, turquoise, unforgettable at Sandy Cay in the British Virgin Islands

–  “Technicolor” water that shifts through different shades of blue, from crystal clear to vibrant cobalt

–  One of the most romantic beaches in the world—Dead Man’s Bay on Peter’s Island (Don’t read into the name!)

– The Baths—large granite boulders, white sandy beaches, caverns and grottoes, creating crystal wading pools that are great for snorkeling

– Jost Van Dyke with its beach main road and lack of modern technology like TVs, computers and cell phones

– Diamond Cay, a natural sea spa where the high tide creates tickling bubbles against the jagged rocks

– Some of the world’s best sailing through the Sir Frances Drake Channel with its calm weather but constant winds

The main island is mainly awesome

British Virgin Islands Sunset Beach

Romantic sunsets upon breathtaking beaches are for you to enjoy in BVI.

Tortola is a chameleon. For honeymoon couples, it is an intimate getaway by Smuggler’s Cove, a secluded abode nestled next to palm trees and crystal waterways. For the fun-seeking vacationer, it becomes a laidback paradise with open-air restaurants and bars, quaint accommodations and local shops. Tortola “hangs ten” at Apple and Josiah’s Bays, where you’ll find some of the most gnarly swells in the Atlantic, and it serves up gourmet dishes at the accredited branch of the New England Culinary Institute, where Food Network’s celebrity chef Alton Brown trained. The island’s also a secret-keeper with the Jewels of the BVI—an enchanting set of inns, villas and hotels that charm, amaze and relax guests into a state of utter bliss.

Here, you’ll also find Long Bay Beach Club, an Elite Island Resort; The Sugar Mill Hotel; Scrub Island; and transportation to Peter Island Resort. These resorts are all award-winners, including Sugar Mill which has been voted One of the Top 10 Hotels in the Caribbean by Condé Nast Traveler’s readers’ poll, and Scrub Island, a TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence 2014 Winner. There’s no better time to head to BVI with savings up to 25% and up two nights free!

The Fat Virgin is PHAT

Little Trunk Bay Virgin Gorda British Virgin Islands

Swing by Little Trunk Bay after visiting The Baths on Virgin Gorda.

Who doesn’t want a destination with personality? Virgin Gorda is just the place. If you enjoy the natural charms of BVI, then get ready to be enchanted by The Baths, a series of caverns and grottoes with wading pools of crystal clear water. They rock—literally! The rock formations create unique snorkeling opportunities with coral, sponges and marine life. Some of the rocks are rough, cut by nature’s unrelenting hand, while others are smooth, having been cradled by Mother Nature’s gentle touch.

Virgin Gorda is fancy, too. It’s home to BVI’s first luxury resort, Little Dix Bay—now Rosewood Little Dix Bay—which was opened in the 1960’s by Laurence Rockefeller. The resort has preserved its natural charm with coconut palms, lush gardens of exotic and colorful flowers, and private cottages for spa services. Bitter End Yacht Club is only reachable by—you guessed it!—boat, and you can stay in one of the hillside villas or on one of the area’s yachts. Biras Creek Resort, a honeymoon retreat, has private villas for larger parties and outdoor verandas for a truly relaxing afternoon among the elements.

Stay in the famous Rosewood Little Dix Bay, Bitter End Yacht Club and Biras Creek now with savings up to 25%, full board for two daily and a seventh night free.

A destination to relax and rejuvenate

British Virgin Islands The Baths

British Virgin Islands offer some of the most spectacular snorkeling areas – like The Baths

This past July, award-winning host and veteran journalist Katie Couric presented six women on her show Katie with all-expense paid trips to BVI. The women, ranging in age from 28 to 38, underwent lung transplants and survived cystic fibrosis. They have bonded through the illness, supporting each other through life’s trials. Each woman received four-day, three-night accommodations at Peter Island Resort & Spa and airfare was provided by the British Virgin Island Tourist Board.

“We are excited to welcome these six young women to our shores and we praise them for their courageous journey to recovery,” said Sharon Flax-Mars, director of tourism for BVI, on BVITourism.com. “Our islands and cays are the perfect destination to relax, reconnect, and rejuvenate.”
