Hotel Happenings: Property Updates – Week of June 8

SpongeBob breaks ground in the DR; Sheraton is going grand or going home; and Hyatt Centric heads to South Beach. Here’re your property updates!

 

Travel Pulse reports that the new Nickelodeon Punta Cana broke ground last week. The hotel, slated to open in June 2016, is a partnership of Karisma Hotels & Resorts and Viacom International Media Networks, and will feature 204 suites, the Nick Village, the Nick Waterpark, a sports center, a beachfront infinity pool, and more. It will also share a beach with a new Sensatori resort, which is scheduled to open in May 2016.

Residence Inn by Marriott announced it will begin a new program, Residence Inn Mix™. Embracing the concept of social hour, Residence Inn will begin a three-times-a-week schedule of events to help bring travelers together for some relaxation. Monday will be “It’s On” with “must-see TV” and appetizers; Tuesday will be “Off the Grill” with hot favorites. Alternating Wednesdays will offer “Food Trucks,” “Local Flavors,” and “Just Desserts.” Guests are also encouraged to stop by the front desk for “Out & About,” local entertainment and sports information.

 

Renaissance Hotels will host its Fourth Annual Global Day of Discovery on June 11 at 160 hotels around the world, inviting guests and the local community to attend exclusive hotel events and to explore the neighborhood for great food and nightlife. The hotel experience will be crafted by the hotel’s concierge—The Navigator—and the day will mark the official launch at Evenings at Renaissance, which will take place from five to nine every night with a signature Bar Ritual, centered around local flavors from the tap. Events highlights include a happy hour block party with Robin Thicke, Natalia La Rose, and Chicago’s DJ HXLT at the Renaissance Chicago Downtown to celebrate its $22 million transformation; and a flash mob performance of the opening number, “Welcome to the Renaissance,” from Broadway smash “Something Rotten!” at the Renaissance New York Times Square Hotel. Renaissance urges everyone to see all the action on Periscope, the live video streaming app, @RenHotels.

Rosewood Hotels & Resorts announced its third property in California, Rosewood Miramar Beach Montecito, which is scheduled to open in 2018 in Santa Barbara. The hotel will be located on the site of the former Miramar Beach Hotel and will offer 122 guestrooms and 48 suites, including single-story cottages and bungalows.

Travel Weekly reports that Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya and Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Punta Cana will feature Camp Woodward sports, including dry land snowboarding, indoor skiing, skateboarding, BMX, hip-hop dance, and trampoline at facilities at their resorts in 2016. The programs will instructor-based and open to kids, teens, and adults with resort credit. Non-hotel guests will be charged a fee.

Hilton Hotels & Resorts announced the opening of the Hilton Yuxi Fuxian Lake in the Yunnan Province in China. This 346-guestroom hotel, modeled with a relaxed Mediterranean style, brings the total number of Hilton properties in China to more than 50.

 

Hilton also announced the agreement to bring an upscale 535-guestroom hotel into the heart of the Dubai World Center, near Dubai’s Al Maktoum International Airport. It is anticipated to open in early 2019.

Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc. announced its Sheraton 2020 plan, which included the creation of a new premier tier, Sheraton Grand, and the opening of 150-plus hotels by 2020. Details of Sheraton Grand haven’t been released, but Sheraton hopes to court more than 100 Sheraton premier hotels to the portfolio and to focus on high-value travelers.

Sheraton returns to Barra da Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro’s exclusive enclave, in anticipation of the 2016 Rio Olympics. Sheraton Barra Rio de Janeiro Hotel will undergo a multimillion dollar transformation in two phases. The first phase, which will include a renovation of all guestrooms and suites, the lobby and pool, is scheduled to be completed in 2016. All public areas, Sheraton Fitness®, and the restaurant are scheduled for completion by 2018.

St. Regis Hotels & Resorts announced the Palladium hotel in Mumbai will debut as St. Regis Mumbai in the third quarter of 2015. Starwood has more than 40 hotels in India and another 37 currently in different stages of completion.

Four Points by Sheraton Kaluga opened this week, introducing the Four Points brand to Russia. The hotel has 174 guestrooms, the signature Agua Spa, La Grillade Restaurant with Mediterranean dishes and Asian twists by local Chef Vladmir Rumiantsev, the Show Kitchen, and The Hubble Bar.

Four Points Moncton in New Brunswick, Canada, also opened after a $4 million renovation of an independent hotel. The 128-guestroom hotel is located near downtown Moncton and the Greater Moncton International Airport.

Starwood also announced the signing of Sheraton Yangon Hotel, a new build in Republic of the Union of Myanmar. The 375-guestroom hotel, near Kandawgyi Lake, is scheduled to open July 2017.

Hyatt Hotels Corporation announced the opening of Hyatt Centric South Beach Miami, a 105-room lifestyle hotel and the second in the Hyatt Centric brand. The hotel is located on Collins Avenue and 16th Street, and is a 10-story glass building, blending in with the city’s Art Deco roots.

 

Hyatt also announced the opening of Hyatt House Pittsburgh/Bloomfield/Shadyside, the first Hyatt-branded hotel in Pittsburg’s East End. It offers 128 residentially-inspired studios and one-bedroom Kitchen Suites, free-WiFi access, a Complimentary Morning Spread with a full hot breakfast served daily, and a pet-friendly policy.

TripAdvisor awarded 130 hotels operated by Meliá Hotels International its Certificate of Excellence (COE) and 58 have entered TripAdvisor’s new Hall of Fame, which commends hotels that earn COE for five consecutive years.

 

Meliá announced the signing of Meliá Yangon, a new-build property with 400 rooms, the signature Level tier, and the YHI Spa. The hotel will be housed in a complex with office buildings, apartments, and a commercial center, and is slated to open 2016.

Travel Weekly reports the City Place project, located next to Levi’s Stadium in San Francisco, will include a 225-roomn Equinox hotel, a 400-room business hotel, and a 150-room lifestyle hotel. There is currently no timeframe on the project.

Caribbean 360 reports that Royalton Antigua Resort & Spa, an all-inclusive resort, is slated to open in 2017 and will feature 500 rooms and more than 200 condominium units.

Choice Hotels International welcomed the 78-room Alegria on the southern coast of St. Maarten and historic Giacomo Hotel, locating within walking distance of Niagara Falls, into the Choice Ascend Hotel Collection. The Alegria overlooks Maho Bay and is adjacent to the beach, while The Giacomo was completed in 1929 and is one of the tallest structures in downtown Niagara Falls.

Travel Weekly reports that The Westin New York at Times Square completed its $33 million renovation to its 873 rooms. To each room was added a movable desk and 47-inch TVs, and the hotel itself welcomed 10 new rooms.

Caribbean Journal reports the Grand Hyatt Playa del Carmen is scheduled to open in Riviera Maya on June 15. The “urban beach hotel” features 314 rooms and is located on Playa del Carmen’s Mamitas Beach. Originally announced as “Hyatt Playa del Carmen,” Hyatt confirms that the property has undergone an “extraordinary transformation” to become a Grand Hyatt.

Moon Palace Jamaica Grande has advised that its new opening date is July 11, 2015. The opening has been delayed four times, the latest due to fire damage.
