The future of Starwood is at stake; Omni scores a homeroom in Atlanta; and Melia branches out to Jamaica. Here are this week’s property updates.
Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide announced it is “exploring strategic alternatives,” including the possibility of the company’s sale, reports Travel Pulse. Starwood owns and operates more than 1,000 properties worldwide under a variety of brands, including Westin, Sheraton, St. Regis, and more. According to Fortune.com, the company has already began an “asset-light” strategy to sell off $1.5 billion worth of property within the past two years.
Marriott has been made aware of fraudulent telephone calls where the caller requests personal information, such as credit card data in exchange for a complimentary stay at a Marriott hotel. Marriott urges callers not to give out any personal information and to end the call.
The Ritz-Carlton, Chicago will become a full participant in the Ritz-Carlton hotel portfolio. Since opening in 1975, the hotel had been operating using The Ritz-Carlton name under a license agreement that did not allow for full integration.
The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company announced a second hotel in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in Jeddah, The Ritz-Carlton, Jeddah, which will open in late summer. The 224-guestroom hotel will cater all types of guests, from business travelers to large wedding groups with 30 royal suites spanning more than 1600 square feet.
Travel Weekly reports the Radisson Ambassador Plaza Hotel & Casino in San Juan has closed, citing a decline in profitability over the last decade.
Montage Hotels & Resorts announced plans to develop and operate a new seaside resort by Santa Maria Bay in Los Cabos with 122 spacious guestrooms and suites, as well as 52 Montage residences. Montage Los Cabos will be the first international property for Montage and is scheduled to open in late 2017 with an indoor-outdoor living environment, designed after the Baja desert landscape and the turquoise waters of the Sea of Cortez.
Hyatt Hotels Corporation announced the opening of Hyatt Palace New York/Yonkers, the first Hyatt Place in Westchester County; and Hyatt Place Pittsburgh South/Meadows Racetrack & Casino in Washington, Penn. An enclosed walkway bridge connects The Meadows Casino to the Hyatt Place Pittsburgh South.
Omni Hotels & Resorts, in partnership with The Atlanta Braves, are developing The Omni Atlanta Hotel at SunTrust Park, which will feature 16 floors, 260 guestrooms rooms and suites, and an elevated pool deck and bar overlooking the plaza and ballpark. The hotel is slated to break ground later this year.
Rosewood Hotels & Resorts® has announced it will open the Rosewood Puebla in 2016 at the UNESCO World Heritage Site and offer 79 guestrooms, a rooftop bar, and a picturesque, private, walled courtyard with a 300-year-old chapel.
Hilton Worldwide announced an agreement to open The Statler Hotel & Residences in Dallas, Texas, under the Curio – A Collection by Hilton brand. The 19-story hotel will feature 161 hotel rooms on lower five floors and 219 residences on the top 11, as well as four restaurants, a hotel lounge, and a 14,500-square-foot-ballroom. It is expected to debut October 2016.
DoubleTree by Hilton announces the opening of DoubleTree by Hilton Park City – The Yarrow (Utah), near Park City Mountain Resort, Deer Valley Resort, and Canyon Resort.
Hilton announced the opening of Hampton Inn by Hilton Timmins, Ontario; the Hampton Inn by Hilton Ottawa Airport; and Hilton Garden Inn Milan North (Italy).
Hilton will introduce four new hotels in Turkey under the Hilton Garden Inn and Hampton by Hilton brand, which will bring the number of Hilton hotels in the country over 60. Hilton Garden Inn will open in Isparta and Safranbolu, and Hampton by Hilton will bring new hotels to Kahramanmaras and Izmir, Aliaga. All hotels are expected to open in 2016.
Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc. announced the opening of the Sheraton Grand Hotel, Dubai, the first new-build for Sheraton in Dubai in over 30 years. The hotel is part of a three-tower development with a rooftop swimming pool, three restaurants and a lounge, a Shine Spa by Sheraton™, and more.
The Sheraton® brand is one heading south of the border, this time to Cozumel, Mexico for the Sheraton Cozumel Resort. Scheduled to open in 2018, the resort will have a prime beachfront location and be only 10 miles from the city center.
Westin branches out to the Philippines with The Westin Manila Sonata Palace, a 300-guestroom hotel in the Ortigas Business District of downtown Manila. This hotel, slated to open in 2019, will join The Westin Manila Bayshore, which will debut in 2018, and the Sheraton Manila Hotel, which will open in 2017.
St. Regis Moscow Nikolskaya opened this week, near Lubyanka Square and Red Square, and near the Duma and major businesses. The hotel boasts two new dining experiences from Michelin-starred chef Kamel Benmamar, and guests can order the Red Maria, a signature Bloody Mary with marinated horseradish and fresh beetroot juice. St. Regis’ portfolio has tripled in the last decade and continues to grow, with openings in Mumbai and Dubai later this year.
Travel Weekly reports that Melia Braco Village, Melia’s first Jamaican resort, will open in later this year. Originally the Braco Beach Resort & Spa, which closed in 2013, the property is undergoing a renovation.

Hilton Worldwide announced the conversion of the Hilton Garden Inn Richmond into a full-service Hilton Hotels & Resorts brand property. The hotel, housed in the historic Miller & Rhoads building, will undergo a $11.5 million transformation with the addition of 10,000 additional square feet of meeting/event space, an enhanced 24-hour fitness center, and a renovation of all 250 guest rooms. The hotel is expected to be completed with enhancements by the end of 2015.
Four Seasons revealed the look and some details about its new Four Seasons Jet Experience, which includes air travel and ground transportation, planned excursions, all meals and beverages throughout the trip, and luxurious accommodations at Four Seasons hotels and resorts. The private jet has ten trained in-flight crew, including an Executive Chef, a Sous Chef, a Four Seasons Concierge, and a Global Guest Services Manager.
Four Seasons and Resorts also announced its plans to manage the Grand-Hotel Du Cap-Ferrat in the French Riviera, effective May 8, 2015.
Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc., announced the opening of The Westin Jekyll Island in Georgia (the state!), a 200-room, beachfront hotel, and is one of the six Westin properties opening in North America this year.
