Honeymoon in Paradise – Tahiti

By Meghan Brennan

Your honeymoon is the first vacation of your married life, which makes it one of the most important trips you’ll ever take. So when you decide where you’re headed, you want to make sure it’s somewhere memorable. Somewhere with sunshine to spare, white sand beaches, overwater bungalows…we just described Tahiti, didn’t we?

There are some very good reasons why Tahiti is one of the top honeymoon destinations in the world. Seclusion, for one – it’s far enough away to avoid any unwanted interruptions, but still easy to get to, with just one stop required when traveling from New York. It’s uniquely beautiful, so every one of your vacation photos will have a stunning backdrop. Tahiti is the perfect place to do whatever you want, whether that’s sailing the ocean, snorkeling a lagoon, or nothing more than lying by the water and hearing the waves crash on the sand. Besides, who can say no to an overwater bungalow?

The Tahitian people are amazing as well, and with them as your hosts, your honeymoon is sure to be filled with smiles. From being greeted on arrival with music, dance, and flowers to a morning meal delivered to your room by catamaran, the people you encounter will be warm and welcoming in a way that will make you feel like you’re part of Tahiti.

A Tahitian honeymoon also means the opportunity for island hopping through French Polynesia, either by land or sea. Tahiti is the biggest and most populous of the islands, as well as being home to the city of Papeete, where you can shop to your heart’s content and eat at some great – though not inexpensive – restaurants, where the cuisine reflects the multi-ethnic nature of French Polynesia. It’s easy to get out of the city, and most accommodations are a short taxi ride from downtown.

Perhaps the most famous island of the archipelago is Bora Bora, less than an hour flight away from Tahiti.  Home to the first overwater bungalows, these unique accommodations quickly became an icon of French Polynesia. Smaller islands like Huahine and Moorea have their charms as well. Moorea is largely rural, but is home to the Tiki Village, where you can see a replica of a traditional Tahitian village, learn about the Polynesian way of life, have a fantastic buffet dinner, and see an amazing show. In Huahine, you can tour the stunning lagoons via motorized canoe, with opportunities to see coral gardens, various villages, and the pearl farms from which come the famous Tahitian black pearls.

However you choose to spend it, a trip to Tahiti with your new spouse is guaranteed to be an unforgettable start to your new life together.
